Back of Beyond offers families the opportunity to experience back country adventures that they would otherwise not be able to enjoy. This is achieved by offering families a level of support that makes it possible for them to backpack or participate in one of our hut or lodge trips. The services offered include: providing equipment, porters to carry the necessary equipment and supplies the guides and parents and children can not reasonalbly carry, camp set ups, prepared meals,etc.
Beyond this high level of service, we also offer a naturalist program for the children and parents. This program combines learning about the environment in fun and informative ways, and as parents are fully involved, methods of helping their children appreciate and understand nature. Families are provided with bug boxes, magnifying glasses, journals, sketching pencils, and paints in order to record and fully appreciate their surroundings. The program is customized both in physical challenge and content for the family group, ensuring an appropriate program for all ages of children from the very young to the parents age. Often we will assign a second guide naturalist to make sure your family has an unforgetably rewarding vacation.
Back of Beyond has been recognized for the excellence of these programs by being nominated and winning the 2002 Heritage Tourism Award for Children's Progamming.
Family Mountain Hut Trips
Stanley Mitchell Hut: Yoho and Little Yoho Valley
These trips are similiar to the Mountain Hut Treks but geared to families. Guides of these trips have experienced in the special need s of children and are able to offer a level of interpretation that is geared for maintaining the interest of a young audience. The itinerary is similar to our regular hut trips, although, the pacing and distances travelled is adjusted to the groups' age and ability.

Have you always wanted to spend a night camping with your family but realize the logistics of doing so make it almost impossible to do on your own? This is an ideal trip for families who want to backpack with young children.
The extra help we provide your familiy with carrying equipment, preparing meals and setting up camp alleviate the problems asscociated with the logistics of backpacking. With the addition of interpretive guides who can help motivate your children, family backpacking becomes not only feasible but an excellent exercise in families working together to achieve a worthwhile and tangible goal. What's more it's fun!!
The typical backpack for a young family would involve a short hike to a campground, where your camp would be set up for you to use as a base camp and day hikes take you into the surrounding mountains to fully explore the area. The backpack will be completely customized for your family with their abilities, ages and strengths being the criteria to establish the itinerary. So, if your children are older expect more challenge.
