Backpacking Series: BC
Pacific Rim National Park: 9 days
Explore the Mysterious West Coast Trail
ITINERARY:
Pre-Trip:
Hotel in Victoria - Sightseeing - Self Guided Meet in Victoria
A mandatory pre-trip meeting to meet fellow trekkers, check equ ipment, and receive all details of the trip is scheduled for the day before we leave on the trail. We then proceed by van to Port Renfrew where we will check in to our motel and attend Heritage Canada presentation on the West Coast Trail. This done, we can get an early departure on the first day on the trail the next morning.
Day 1
After breakfast we will be whisked by zodiac to the Gordon River trailhead. We will hike from Gordon River to Thrasher Cove through centuries old rain forest. This day while it is only six kilometers is strenuous, as we gain and lose elevation all day long. Provides an excellent introduction to the rigors of the trail.
Distance 6 Kilometres (3.6 miles)
Day 2
This day will feature hiking along the continental shelf. Highlights of this day include the sea caves at Owen Point and some initial surge channels that we need to cross. Our second camp is complete with its own swimming hole.
Distance 6 Kilometres (3.6 miles)
Day 3
"The Blowdown" and "The Bog", once infamous, are features on the trail this day. We also encounter the longest sets of ladders. If timing and tides allow we will hike the "shelf" from Camper Bay to Sandstone Creek. This section has "interesting" surge channels. This short but strenuous day ends at Logan Creek. The afternoon consists of lazing in the sun or exploring tidal pools. Whales have been sighted in this locale.
Distance 8 Kilometres (4.9 miles)
Day 4
From this point on, Grey Whale sightings are often a part of our days and seeing Orcas is a very real possibility. If tides and timing allow, we will view Adrenaline Surge channel, before proceeding on to Walbran Creek, our lunch stop. You may take a refreshing swim here. Travel from lunch to our camp at Carmanah Creek is on a wide, broad beach. The pounding surf will lull you to sleep. The world's largest Sitka spruce lies just upstream.
Distance 10 Kilometres (6.1 miles)
Day 5
A visit to a manned lighthouse, a unique beachside "store" and an hour or so of viewing sea lions give this day a marvelous start. We continue along the shore experiencing a seagull beach and interesting sections of shelf where the remains of many shipwrecks are evident. Lunch will be at "The Cribs" where (at low tide) we can see large starfish at eye level and take a shower in, an admittedly, less than warm waterfall. Camp will be on the wide expanse of Cheewhat Beach.
Distance 10 Kilometres (6.1 miles)
Day 6
After hiking alongside past and present Indian villages, we will be ferried across Nitinat narrows by Carl Edgar Jr. Hiking will be on rocky headlands and along the shoreline. At low tide, we hike through the Hole-in-the-Wall before reaching the spectacular Tsusiat Falls where you can laze on the beach after 'showering' under the falls.
Distance 11 Kilometres (6.7 miles)
Day 7
From now on, the days are fairly easy, hiking the trail and shore, where you can explore tidal pools and various shipwrecks. A cable car crossing at the Klanawa River adds yet another new experience. Our camp at Michigan Creek offers an excellent opportunity to view Grey Whales feeding just off the continental shelf.
Distance 13 Kilometres (7.9 miles)
Day 8
Even the last day of this hike has its share of rewards. The hike thr ough an absolutely mystical section of rain forest is made even more unique by the wailing of the Pachena Point foghorn. Another lighthouse visit is possible. As you approach the trail's end, you are able to catch glimpses of Pachena Bay. Once done, you can freshen up for the ride to Victoria with a swim on the wide sloping beach. A brief visit to picturesque Bamfield is a fitting finish to your West Coast Adventure.
Distance 12 Kilometres (7.3 miles)
