Backpacking Series: Alberta
Northover Ridge: 6 days
Intermediate - Advanced Backpack in the Canadian Rockies

The Northover Ridge takes you as remote and wild as you will find in the southern Rockies. You will be able to peer over a precipice to glaciers far below. You will traverse a 9000 foot glaciated pass. This hike is indeed a rugged and true wilderness experience. You will end up with the sort of adventures and photographs that only the most intrepid travelers experience. Participants must, however, evaluate their skills and level of fitness carefully before embarking.
The trip will graphically demonstrate the need to maintain wilderness areas not only through National, Provincial Parks and "Special Places" designations, but also through ecological buffer zones around these national treasures. The timeless grandeur of this Canadian Rocky Mountain wilderness will be revealed to you much as it existed in bygone years. This is an extraordinary adventure for vacationers who seek the uncommon!
ITINERARY:
Day 1
Orientation in Canmore to meet the other trekkers, check
equipment, and receive all details of the trip. This will be a morning meeting,
as we will leave for our first night's camp in the early afternoon. Our first
day will be to Point Campground on Upper Kananaskis Lake. We will hike around
the north end of the lake where the trail takes us through the largest rock
fall in the region.
Distance 4 km (2.5 miles) Maximum Elevation 1700 m (5600
feet)
Day 2
The Northover adventure begins in earnest on this day. We will
climb from the lakeshore at 6200 feet to over 8000 feet and into the province
of British Columbia, where our second camp will be. The trail is primitive, and
as we work our way out of the valley bottom we will pass through dense
sub-alpine forest, breach a cliff band on a scree slope, and trek through a
ruggedly beautiful area of alpine larch and meadow. We will then ascend through
this zone into a world of rock and glaciated peaks: the French Generals group.
Our camp this night is beside a small tarn (lake) well above tree line, nestled
beneath the unusual Warrior Mountain.
Distance: 11km (7 miles) Maximum Elevation: 2520m
(8200feet)
Day 3-4
On Day 3, weather permitting, we will proceed on to Northover Ridge
at an elevation of over 9000 feet. From this vantage point you are able to look
down on peaks and glaciers below. The ridge is initially rounded, but as we
hike its almost 3 km length it becomes sharper for a short distance. For this
glorious stretch you will be treated to an experience and views that usually
only mountaineers enjoy. Descending the ridge may bring mixed feelings: you
will lose your eagles' aerie but will be glad to come back into the "friendly"
alpine zone. This night we camp at Three Isle Lake. You will not only have
crossed the spine of the North American continent, but you will have literally
walked along it! If the weather is poor for this traverse we will hike in the
Aster Lake region.
Distance 6km (4 miles) Maximum Elevation 2845m (9333 feet)
Day 4-5
We will leave Three Isle Lake,
hiking down to the Kananaskis River at Forks Campground. A stiff climb from
here will take us over the shoulder of Mount Beatty. When we crest a summit of
this shoulder, another 30 minutes will bring us to our campsite at Turbine
Canyon. This canyon is a spectacular fault where the water of Turbine Creek
disappears into a fissure and falls more than 300 vertical feet.
Distance 14 km (9 miles) Maximum Elevation 22760 m (7740
feet)
Day 6
On this day, you will
experience another glorious adventure as we ascend the Haig Glacier to a narrow
glaciated pass and descend the Robertson Glacier to the trail's end.
Distance 14 km (9 miles)

Changes in this itinerary may be necessary due to snow or weather conditions, trail safety or closures, and availability of backcountry camping spots.
